Taking care of your teeth is a habit you acquire during childhood. Also, specialists are unanimous: it must be instilled at the appearance of the first tooth, around 6 months.
How to take care of your Child’s teeth!
Brushing the teeth, using a baby toothbrush and a small hazelnut – only – adapted toothpaste (toothpastes “kids” at 0.005% F): a daily gesture that must be apprehended as a game, story of winning the trust of the child.
Once the dentition is in place (between 2 and 3 years), brushing at least twice a day is recommended, with a toothpaste adapted to the age of the child that contains a controlled dose of fluoride. “An excess of fluoride can alter the formation of enamel and cause white spots on the teeth,” says Dr. Olivier Marmy. Between 6 and 12 years old, when the child knows how to spit, a standard toothpaste can do the trick. However, children often prefer the fruity flavors of toothpastes that are intended for them, to those mentholated (“junior” toothpaste at 0.145% F).
Leave to do and check
While it is important to stimulate the child’s autonomy in brushing teeth, it is advisable to check that the work has been done well, and to do it yourself once a day. A small hourglass on the edge of the sink can help brushing a little longer than … 30 seconds. Do not hesitate, either, to remind his offspring to brush their teeth after meals, which for many parents represents a real fight. But a battle that is worth it, since it is to avoid cavities and expensive treatments at the dentist. Ensuring food is also part of this prevention work.
Swear, spit and rinse or not
Should the child rinse his mouth with water after brushing his teeth? It is clear that opinions on this issue are divided. Dr. Olivier Marmy explains why: “The rest of toothpaste, with the fluorine it contains, is protective for the teeth. Nevertheless, toothpastes, like any cosmetic, contain many adjuvants. As a precaution, you will rinse your mouth slightly to eliminate them, but with a small amount of water. ”
Regularly going to the dentist, and especially before the problems appear, is important to trivialize the thing and avoid trauma. For that, we will not wait for the entrance to the school. Dr. Jean-Pierre Chung suggests to parents to take their child with them to the dental hygienist, for a first contact: “It’s good that the child makes the habit to open the mouth and let the doctor- dentist carry out an examination with his professional instruments. For parents, this is an opportunity to receive basic advice. When the child is older, a regular visit should be planned. Because think about it, the visit of the school dentist is only a quick screening which cannot be a substitute for a more thorough control at his dentist’s doctor.
What is caries?
Caries is formed by three factors: dental plaque, sugar and time. Bacteria present in the mouth feed on carbohydrates, in other words sugar. They turn it into acid, which will gradually attack the tooth and eat enamel. Caries can be asymptomatic – nothing is felt – unless it enters the dentine and reaches the nerve of the tooth. Untreated caries will have serious consequences for the tooth (necrosis of the pulp, the nerve) that can cause its loss, and on the surrounding tissues (infections and abscesses).
